Pictures of the Secaucus Bypass (NJ 3)
Secaucus Bypass (NJ 3) Eastbound Secaucus Bypass (NJ 3) Westbound
This is the beginning of the freeway section of the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 east, in Clifton.  West of here, NJ 3 is a divided arterial with heavy business development, but from here east, it is full freeway.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the beginning of the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 west, in North Bergen Township.  NJ 3's eastern end is at Tonelle Avenue, US 1&9, the southbound lanes of which are being crossed to enter NJ 3 west in the above photo.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 east, at exit 4(NJ 21, Newark, Passaic) in Clifton.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 west, at exit 10(East NJ 495, I-95, New Jersey Turnpike, Lincoln Tunnel) in North Bergen Township.  Because the main traffic flow is from the tunnel as opposed to being from NJ 3, the 'mainline' of NJ 3 narrows to 1 lane here to accomodate the merge of traffic from NJ 495.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 east, east of exit 4(NJ 21, Newark, Passaic) crossing the Passaic River from Clifton to Rutherford Boro.  The old draw bridge just ahead is slated to be replaced in the next 10 years.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 west, just west of exit 9(Secaucus, Service Road) in Secaucus.  This section is flanked with service roads due to the heavy commercial development which visibly flanks the freeway here.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 east, at exit 5(South NJ 17, CR 507, Park Avenue, Riverside Avenue, Ridge Road) in Rutherford Boro.  This section is slated for widening under the same plan to replace the Passaic River draw bridge.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 west, west of exit 8(Meadowland Parkway), crossing the Hackensack River from Secaucus to East Rutherford Boro.  The westbound bridge is designed differently from the eastbound bridge:  the westbound bridge has no above-deck components, as opposed to the girders which stretch over the eastbound bridge's deck.  However, both bridges are in desperate need for deck replacement.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 east, at exit 6(NJ 17, Service Road, Lyndhurst, Rutherford) in Rutherford Boro.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 west, at exit 7(North NJ 120, I-95, New Jersey Turnpike, Stadium, Racetrack, East Rutherford) in East Rutherford Boro.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 east, just west of exit 7(North NJ 120, I-95, New Jersey Turnpike, East Rutherford, Sports Complex) in East Rutherford Boro.  Giants Stadium is directly ahead.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 west, west of exit 7(North NJ 120, I-95, New Jersey Turnpike, Stadium, Racetrack, East Rutherford) in East Rutherford Boro.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 east, west of exit 8(Meadowland Parkway), crossing the Hackensack River from East Rutherford Boro to Secaucus.  The eastbound bridge is designed differently from the westbound bridge:  the westbound bridge has no above-deck components, as opposed to the girders visible here.  However, both bridges are in desperate need for deck replacement.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 west, at exit 6(NJ 17, Service Road, Rutherford, Lyndhurst) in Rutherford Boro.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 east, east of exit 8(Meadowland Parkway) in Secaucus.  The sole business remaining directly on NJ 3 is the gas station visible here on the right.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 west, just east of exit 5(CR 507, Ridge Road, Park Avenue, Riverside Avenue) in Rutherford Boro.  The exit distance sign above is a rare sight on New Jersey freeways.  NJ 3's status as a converted arterial certainly has a significant role in its placement here.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 east, at exit 9(I-95, New Jersey Turnpike, Kennedy Boulevard, Secaucus, North Bergen) in Secaucus.  This is the beginning of the service road section which features heavy comercial development just off the freeway proper, some of which is visible on the right.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 west, at exit 5(CR 507, Ridge Road, Park Avenue, Riverside Avenue) in Rutherford Boro.  This section passes through a residential zone which is visible from the freeway in several places, as it is on the right in the photo.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 east, at exit 10(East NJ 495, Lincoln Tunnel) in Secaucus.  The main flow of traffic leaves NJ 3 here and heads for the tunnel via NJ 495, necesitating the left exit here, so NJ 3 is forced to 'exit itself' via the right ramp directly ahead.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 west, just east of exit 4(NJ 21, Passaic, Newark), crossing the Passaic River from Rutherford Boro to Clifton.  This old draw bridge still features the grate bridge deck as visible here, but is scheduled to be replaced with a fixed bridge within the next 10 years.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the end of the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 east, at Tonnele Avenue, US 1&9, in North Bergen Township.  The main traffic flow is southerly, so due to space restrictions, no direct access to US 1&9 north is provided.  The road continues as Tonnele Avenue, US 1&9.  Filmed August 24, 2000.

This is the end of the freeway section of the Secaucus Bypass, NJ 3 west, in Clifton.  From here west to its western terminus at US 46, NJ 3 features heavy commercial development.  Filmed August 24, 2000.
